to celebrate record store day 2016, claremont 56 is proud to present something rather special – a killer single-sided release whose origins are shrouded in mystery. “tropic of capricorn” arrived at c56 hq with little or no information. while its’ humid sound effects and glistening, unfurling melodies evoke hazy memories of mediterranean sunsets and adriatic sunrises, the track’s creators live east of ukraine, in the colder surrounds of the russia. regardless of who made it, you’ll struggle to find a single that’s quite as warm, tactile and seductively groovy. built around a hypnotic, slo-mo groove, “tropic of capricorn” soothes and sedates from start to finish. its’ ingredients are relatively sparse – think gently undulating beats, toasty chords and an electric harp that gently ebb and flow like the waters of a mountain stream – but the results are nothing less than stunning.

the motech label has been building a high reputation of late but it’s actually been three years since co-owner, detroit’s dj 3000 (franki juncaj) released a 12 inch of his own. putting that to rights, he delivers take me away, due for release in april and featuring a deadly remix by truncate. the original version of take me away is a deep and hypnotic builder with a relentless groove that stands astride detroit techno and tough house, a style that dj 3000 has championed over the years. truncate is the alias of audio injection (la’s david flores). his remix ups the tempo and adds an infectious vocal cut-up, turning take me away into a raw, hard-hitting cut. the truncate remix has already been picked up by eats everything for his new fabric mix, out soon, as well as receiving early support from dave clarke on his white noise radio show and ben sims on the october edition of run it red.

here at bearfunk we have been pretty busy as of late it was a casual visit to geneva just like any other. we had just finished a buzzing set and soon after we found ourselves talking to a five bearded academic types. it turns out they were a bunch of theoretical physicists out on a cosmologists night out. they work them hard at cern and that day the large hadron collector had been a real beast rebooting five times before lunch. they were pissed off and needed a new challenge. we offered them a job on the spot and they promptly moved to our london hq working on a wage of tea, vinyl and nandos. we set them a challenge. build us a time machine! they started soaking up all those bearfunk-groove-boson particles and. you know what? they did it! a time machine of our own. our first task, jump back in time to 1985 and retrieve us something really cool. set controls to the manhattan office to celluloid records. fresh from their hit with herbie hancocks rockit, spearheading rap with fab five freddys change the beat and afrika bambata stompers the legendary label is preparing to release the debut album from nyc-paris emigre lord funk.

sebastian fiegen rolls out his debut solo release for cadenza records this spring, with a trio of excellent house cuts on the theofidelity ep. the german producer has been crafting quality productions for some time now under aliases and collaborations, and its on lucianos label where he makes his mark as a solo artist. dopeman opens the ep with a rolling chi-town house style groove, a simple yet effective filtered vocal loop and sustained strings harvest the feel good vibes over its solid beats. fiegen keeps up the pace with anando, more drum led house grooves with a high production value, the vocal refrain cutting in and out of the mix whilst the simplistic bassline and woody percussion maintains the bouncing vibes. closing the ep is th01, again coming correct with the feel good factor with its use of the looped sample and lazy, hypnotizing drums. a cracking debut production from fiegen, and a well rounded release for cadenza.

herck is back on fa>le records with this sublime ep. fathoms steals the show, rolling percussive groove, crazy vocal and a a break that will make the hairs on your neck stand on end. on the flip are criteria and uniform. another 2 great cuts. the young romanian is on fire. expect to see a lot of him in 2016.

uk techno veteran broom is one of the most consistent producers in the game and on neon, he delivers four killer dance floor tracks. inspired in equal parts by the swirling, dub techno of chain reaction and the insistent, loopy techno of mid to late-90s jeff mills, the release starts with the steel-plate percussion and churning chord builds of -m19-. broom keeps his focus on that approach for -energy-, where doubled-up claps and clanging chords create an eerie but urgent sensibility, while the title track is a slightly less visceral affair thanks to the inclusion of a sleepy vocal sample amid the churning keys. finally, -involver- sees broom focus his energies elsewhere, its acidic, grimy groove coming across like steve bicknell in a bad mood.

mood 24 brings you the first in a limited vinyl only series in the form of mood series. each track has its own story to tell from artists silat beksi, gorbani, herck, leparente. *secret circle* from silat beksi has a very minimal feel, simplistic drums, repetitive groove combined with spacey atmospheric pads and synths. gorbanis track *the jaw* is more drum and percussion oriented with subtle fx shots and and groovy sub bass. hercks *gura sada* is very atmospheric, lots of organic noises. but its that main synth that gets you moving which the entire track is built around. *flashback* from leparente is deep and groovy, pieced together with a wicked bassline and main synth/pad that you can feel in your soul. ears open, this is just the beginning.....

imperative is a groovy house track with delayed vocal stabs & a sampled female vocal running though with added with 808 clicks, chords & a snapping snare. the system2 remix of imperative is just as cool with a rolling breaky drum loop giving it a 90s house feel, again the vocal leads the track with the groovy bass & chords built around it. first up on the b side once again is a cool groove with sampled vocals & electronic bleeps echoing through the mix. last but not least the juliche hernandez remix of once again has a more 90s feel to it. fast paced with great percussive hits & a chunky bassline to lead, all in all great release aimed firmly at the dancefloor.

red ember records is still legendary in certain circles despite shutting up shop 15 years ago. after some time out of the public eye, though, ewan jansen himself is still very much in business, and here he is with four brand new cuts on his debut for chez damier’s inner balance label. after the appropriately pastoral intro to ‘harvest’ we dive headlong into a flurry of vibrant, detroit-influenced programming of the kind kept alive all these years by rei loci and kirk degiorgio. ‘sines of life’ takes a well-earned breather on the flip, its laid-back setting and all-enveloping bass a massage for the weary body and soul. finally the mood turns playful on ‘square dance’, the chopped, breaksy and off-key groove completely at home alongside uk technicians norken, herbert and ben nevile. it’s rare for people to stay on their game for this long but, as this ep aptly demonstrates, ewan jansen is no ordinary musician.

ashworth concentrates on the essence of solid techno in his first full ep for made of concrete. inspired by the main component of concrete itself, the material is intitled ‘portland’ and consists of no less than four original tracks. “world” makes for a gentle introduction by opening with a soft melodic lead, swiftly changing the tempo after a few measures. we’re quickly immersed in a syncopated bassline peppered with whirring synths that harmonise with full scale piano cuts, the most intriguing earworm on the entire cut. on “launch” the producer lays down hard hitting techno drums from the get-go, setting the foundation for a tense atmosphere. ashworth’s signature move quickly ensues, as he manages to inject emotion through synths and piano pads into an otherwise tense and anxiety-ridden ambiance. toning down the graveness of the previous tracks’ mood, ”mineral” reveals a surrendering groove, with a stripped down, minimalist approach, where the melody is assembled with the help of industrial elements, emotive bleeps and electric glitches. ashworth’s experimental edge is evident in the final track “scatter” - the sub bass lead creates a morose atmosphere paired with low-key synths and mechanical loops. while the first two tracks showcase ashworth’s ability to instill life into solemn techno soundscapes, the second half of the ep successfully exhibits his edgy experimental side, adding up to a heterogenous release.

the first release from sign bit zero features two powerful edits from mick wills. giving new life to the track, ‘center’ by ale mania, a san diego based band, the cuts here contain wholly new structures with a greater focus on the oppressive yet powerful vocal parts and the uplifting string section. by extending the (acoustic) drum track and giving it the groove and strength we have come to associate with his edits, mick has created for us a unique take on the new wave / dark wave genres – ideal for any dj who wants to showcase this sound in a club-focussed context. ‘center’ originally appeared on the ep, ‘a, who sings that beat?’ on volar records and was written by andrew montoya, who has kindly granted us the permission to present this record to you all.

undersound recordings is back with its second release, this time with an ep from berlin based producer etienne. all tracks are characterized by an analogue, simplistic, yet intriguing touch of the artist. dez is a straight 4/4 hypnotic groove, with an articulated bass line taking centre stage shortly after the beginning of the track. dez remix is a seminal track composed by tc80, warm sounds from the start, experimental yet dynamic percussions, perfectly complementing the original track r3mote is the most uplifting track of the release, floor killer, characterised by broken beats and a playful ever evolving melody sensed is deep, electro-infused, introspective. the track is a crescendo of trippy sounds, a vortex marked by retro elements, hypnotic but ever engaging.

fox tooth was one of the big releases of 2015 on local talk. if you haven t heard it you probably dont remember 2015 at all! all we did was play fox tooth. now, a year later we re proud to present the fox tooth remixes. karizma aka kaytronik gets straight to the point, strips down the original and tensely builds the track slowly, keeping the groove on the bone. on the flip, peacy offers a remix with all the elements of the original, perfectly combined with a few tricks of his own, in a stunning new combination, it sure impresses.

with two releases already under his belt on clone, gary gritness aka slikk tim lands on hypercolour with the sugar cane chronicles vol. 1. gritness may be a relatively new name on the block, but his session work for artists like kenny bobien, louie vega and grant nelson has marked up this multi-instrumentalist as a clear talent. hailing from france, gritness had been spotted by underground resitances mad mike banks as one to watch, and on his hypercolour release, displays a deft hand of producing futuristic funk sounds. a spot on blend of raw drum programming and blissfull jazz funk riffs, preachin some tight game sets the eps tone just right with its infectious melodies and cruising groove. darker 1980s soundtrack vibes are explored on stayin strong hand with its thick analogue atmosphere, whilst the laid back and freestyle vibes of working girls demands to be played in the cadillac with the top down! ep closer, fly shit, continues with the tranquil melodies and g-funk factor.

beautiful sonic sorcery from cristi cons and dewalta. elegant, warm, subtle but energetic music, creating a momentum of infinity. our favorit romanian artist known for his productions, his quality amphia label, a:rpia:r as well as his sit project with vlad caia teams up with dewalta from berlin who continues to refine his output on meander. these two kindred spirits met at dewaltas studio to create a spaced-out musical treatment, captivating body and mind. lisa milloy, joined the creative process, adding beautifully flowing words, recorded in one take as stream of conciousness. breath in and dance to their melodies with a clever groove that just flows onwards. with the record basorelief, released in 2014 meander already introduced the greatly talented cristi cons to its circle. now these two artists, bringing bucharest and berlin further together, deliver a hightly anticipated follow-up with this record filled with rhythmic material for the space between. 180gram vinyl, available in two editions: either as full cover-artwork or as limited edition with hand-made screen-printed cover-art.

there is significantly more than a scintilla of exuberance on cosmin trg’s first 2016 venture on his own fizic imprint. number four in the series further explores the dense textures present on last year siiiep, but largely dispenses with the ennui in favour of a different discourse. oblic offers a brisk groove that ebbs and flows among graphite-thin layers of percussion and sonic debris. the recurring dust sample amplifies the vigorous rhythmic attributes of the track, rendering it withprime dance floor capabilities. serpenti takes distant sparkles of mutant chimes, wraps them around the relentless pulse of thudding kick drum and soaks everything in static. granules and grit are extracted from circuitry with a focus on razor sharp sound system efficiency. produced by cosmin trg, transformed by matt colton at alchemy mastering, with original artwork from cosmin himself.

with our regular 12” series both coming to end some people thought that wph would end as well. you should’ve known better, because there is too much gorgeous music coming from our small wph family to just let other labels shine with it. and so we have decided to throw caution into the wind and embark on a new story. a story in which our artists get to tell their story by means of a full album. at the heart of metrobox’ sound is a love for moog, 909 and sh 101 sounds, combined with a knack for seductive melodies and a healthy dose of vocal action. two collaborations with wph head honcho red d and belgian mc champ tlp add some extra oldskool flavor to the proceedings. and yes, we are well aware of the fact that double or triple albums are heavy on your budget and that you all prefer to shell out 15 euro for a one-sided limited detroit release instead of a 12” with three tracks you like ... so this album will come in three separately available 12”s, giving you complete buyer freedom.

bodyjack returns to his bodytrax label with another 3 outstanding bodytrax. is he always like this? is an infectious groove-based techno workout which has been tried and tested by a select few djs over the last few months. kamala’s revenge is a hypnotic tribal roller with darkside vocals, off-kilter rhythms and & tripped out fx. one for the heads down crew. last but not least, the uptempo house jacker disrespect combines a killer bassline and bodyjack’s now signature razor sharp beats ’n’ stabs to round off the ep. oh, and there are 4 locked grooves on the 12- release for the heads. don’t sleep on this one!

this ep starts with “stitched-, which begins by a rough & anxious introduction with a drone bass and a dissonance pad. then a steamroller sub bass engaged itself into an insane run drived by a brushing arpeggiated synth and sharpened cymbals. college road, the eponym track is a bright energetic trippy techno track influenced by house grooves & sonorities, for club use (not only). the last track bkr is a live construct track with both hardware and software stuff to create a freaky bouncing groove.

the second chapter of the startup label series starts with the dreamy * oaas*. its gravitating ambient body music picks up right where startup label 1 left off. the sparkling dust of quarry_s has settled, and mutates into a liquid morphing bass drizzle. moving on to ‘found_weaver’ the hazy synths find a more rhythmical form accompanied by a staccato groove. when the record is flipped a new world gets exposed on the track * wolf*. a more consistent and articulate track with a killer groove. startup label 2 explores the musical map of clubland travelling further than the dance floor, not afraid of venturing behind the * here be dragons* signpost.

splendor & squalour number 3 sees brame & hamo return to their rising imprint. since the boys ep lamajs secrets on dirt crew we have seen them do a string of remixes for labels such as kolor ltd, heist & their very successful remix for harry wolfman and loz goddards uncle buck on dirt crew. all these releases have kept a steady momentum going for the sligo boys in the house scene. for this ep we have a full 3 tracker consisting of all original cuts. the ep kicks off with kebab dreams which takes us on a trip to the moon with greasy drums and saucy groove. up next is the mpc workout cert city paying homage to their hometown of sligo. closing the ep we have retch wretchedness which takes a darker turn showing us the spookier side of brame & hamo while still keeping the jazzy touch. a peak time track for sure.

the next installment on aus music sees the return of a relatively new addition to the roster rob glassett aka fold. throughout previous 12inches on manmakemusic and electric minds and on his outstanding netflix & chill debut for aus last year - fold has laced together dusty house grooves built with a classic approach to sampling funk, disco and soul records. next up - his lennys jam ep starts up with a dub techno groove built with delayed and panned stabs and sharp, pacy drums. rosie lea lays out a rich and sunny groove as a playful sample filters into focus over deftly treated drum kit samples and a buoyant bass line. tracksuits and tennis shoes then follows up with a no-nonsene party jam a short funk link is set over a booming kick that closes up a nicely varied package.
